Friends of the Earth awarded municipalities with the best results in waste management

Bošáca, 21.12.2017

Winners in the competition 3Z – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle about best progress and results municipalities achieved in waste management were announced for the 5th time.

„Friends of the Earth – SPZ organise this competition to point out that positive examples in waste management exist also in our country. If we are aware of such examples, we should highlight and award them“, Branislav Moňok said.

This year, the competition was specific. The municipalities did not register by themselves, but were evaluated according to the data they submitted for 2016. Friends of the Earth assessed whether municipalities fulfil their basic obligations when dealing with municipal waste, for example if they perform the sorted collection of obligatory municipal waste components, small construction waste or bulky waste. They gradually decommissioned municipalities that did not report any amount of mixed municipal waste, paper, glass, plastics, bulky waste, small construction waste, electrical waste, green biological waste. Out of the total of 2,888 evaluated municipalities, only 266 municipalities passed through such criteria.

Out of them, municipalities were awarded in three categories:

  1. a village with the best results in waste management in 2016
  2. a town with the best results in waste management in 2016
  3. a municipality with the best achieved progress in waste management in 2015 and 2016.

The winner in the category 1 was a village Malý Cetín with 63.60 % rate of recycling of evaluated municipal waste components. The municipality has collected all obligatory components, including biological waste, multilayer composite materials, also textiles and clothing.

The winner in the category 2 was a town Nemšová achieving 44.24 % rate of recycling of evaluated municipal waste components, collection of all obligatory components, including biological waste, multilayer composite materials, textiles and clothing.

The winner in the category 3 is a municipality Imeľ with the highest registered positive change in the rate of recycling – 34,66 % in 2016 in comparison with 2015. The rate in 2016 rose to 56.55 %, which corresponds to about 200 kg of sorted communal waste per person. They also produced 117 kg of mixed communal waste per person and realised collection of all obligatory components, including biological waste, multilayer composite materials, textiles and clothing.

„It is encouraging to see that even in our situation it is possible to achieve such a high rate of recycling of waste. If comfortable conditions are created and people are well informed, 50 % of the recycling rate is not an illusion but becomes a fact. Let these municipalities be an example to others", Moňok said.

However, Mr. Moňok also pointed out that this new format of the competition pointed to the fact that there are still many municipalities that do not fulfil all their obligations in the field of waste management or reporting. „That should be changed as soon as possible“, he added.
3Z Competition was part of the project School of Sustainability V4 financially supported from the Visegrad Fund.
