Meaningful and Effective Utilization of Biomass in Slovakia

This position paper outlines basic guidelines for sustainable production, processing, extraction and utilization of biomass in Slovakia and presents principles for provision of public subsidies for specific biomass projects. The goal of the paper is to contribute to coordinated approach towards utilization of biomass in Slovakia, towards better use of its current utilizable potential and towards strengthening of energy self-sufficiency of regions. The document is a result of collective work of independent experts dealing with renewables and discussion among public institutions, businesses, non-governmental organizations as well as individuals.

Hazardous waste incineration in Slovakia

This leaflet provides information about the intent of tunnelling public funds and EU funds through over designed projects for high density incineration plants of hazardous waste in Slovakia. The leaflet also contains basic information about the current preparation phase of a concrete project of the incineration plant in Dubova and suggestions for municipal authorities and the European Commission. The material was distributed at the international conference on structural EU funds in Brussels.

Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal, An Opportunity or a Threat?

A common position document of NGOs from Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia on controversial water canal project connecting rivers Danube, Oder and Elbe. The material points out negative economic and environmental impacts of the project and also regards realization scenario the protagonists of the project contemplate and which is commonly used in preparation phases of large-scale problematic investments: partitioning of the plan into number of parts without their complex examination and a consistent “using” of public finance for the building-up.

Ten Years of Policies of Bretton Wood Institutions in Slovakia

The publication implies findings of long term research in the activities of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Slovakia during the period 1990 - 2000. It points out deformation effects of these institutions on the country's economic development, specific sectors, social state and regional development. the deduction suggests recommendations for both institutions. The publication was presented at an international conference parallel to the annual meeting of both institutions in Prague in September 2000.
